CM outlines strategies to curb crimes in city | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday said the govt has implemented various strategies to reduce criminal activities in capital city, with the key one being checking the backgrounds and identities of persons ‘moving suspiciously during late hours at night’.
In response to a query from Congress MLA from Rajgangpur, C S Raazen Ekka, in the assembly, the CM gave a written reply highlighting that cyber-related offences contribute significantly to the city’s crime rate. “Other factors include disputes related to love, theft and robbery-related crimes, substance abuse and its subsequent crimes, land disputes, past enmity-related disputes, communal and ethnic conflicts and some political rivalries,” Majhi’s reply stated.
The CM detailed that the commissionerate police launched numerous initiatives to reduce criminal activities. “They have enhanced surveillance through continuous patrolling to monitor criminal activities and track suspect movements,” Majhi said. The CM indicated that police forces received instructions to increase night patrols and conduct thorough verification of suspicious individuals. “Officers are checking identification documents and initiating legal proceedings when they discover any violations,” he said.
The govt has deployed 37 police control room vehicles for crime prevention. Additionally, the police commissioner has mandated that property owners must register their tenants’ information at local police stations. “Each police station operates with a property offence prevention and detection team to monitor and act against property-related criminals. A high efficiency response squad has been established for women’s protection. The police have increased patrols at public locations including parks, bus stands, and railway stations,” the CM said.
Police records indicate that 14,416 criminal cases were registered in Bhubaneswar in 2024 compared to 11,975 cases in 2023, showing a 20.38% increase. While rape incidents in Bhubaneswar increased in 2024 from the previous year, cases of murder, dacoity, robbery, burglary and theft decreased. Police data showed rape cases increased to 149 in 2024 from 135 in 2023. Murder cases in the capital city reduced from 52 in 2023 to 43 in 2024.
