TN to get two electronics manufacturing clusters

Tiruvallur: Union minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday announced plans to set up two electronics manufacturing clusters at an investment of 1,112 crore at Kancheepuram’s Pillaipakkam and Tiruvallur’s Manalur.
He said at an event in Tiruvallur that very large electronics manufacturing clusters (EMC) would be set up, and that would help Tamil Nadu’s ecosystem.
Department secretary S Krishnan told TOI the projects entail setting up common facilities such as testing, calibration under the EMC 2.0 scheme, with Centre providing 50% of the project cost 506 crore. The scheme has so far been announced for 10 places across seven states, including two clusters each in Karnataka and Telangana.
Electronics have become the second largest exported goods, overtaking many conventional items developed over decades, the minister said. “This is made possible by the govt’s clear thinking and focused execution.”
And, referring to the Qualcomm design centre, he said Chennai was hosting some of the best chip design facilities.
