Ulaka highlights increase in crimes against women in LS | Bhubaneswar News
Koraput: Congress MP from Koraput Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha on Monday highlighting the alarming increase in crimes against women and minors in Odisha.
In his notice for the motion, the two-time tribal MP revealed statistics of crimes reported in Odisha over the past eight months. The state recorded 54 gang-rape cases and 1,600 incidents of violence against women. Data from the last four years indicated that 36,420 women and 8,403 children have gone missing, with 421 women and girls being trafficked, he wrote.
These crimes have surged by 8% in 2024, posing a severe threat to the safety of vulnerable groups, particularly those in state-run hostels and schools, Ulaka said in his motion.
The MP highlighted disturbing incidents that underscore the crisis. In Malkangiri district, a tribal girl residing in a govt school hostel gave birth to a child while appearing for her Class X board examination. Similarly, in Keonjhar district, a Class VI tribal girl was found pregnant.
Cases of sexual abuse in residential institutions were also reported, including the gang rape of a Class VI girl in Jharusuguda and the suicide of a Class XII girl in Kendrapara following harassment by an examiner. Also, a 10-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Balasore, the MP stated.
Furthermore, beyond sexual crimes, negligence in govt-run hostels has led to 26 student deaths since July 2024, attributed to inadequate medical care, malnutrition, and unsafe conditions. Notably, a Class VI student in Rayagada, Manisha Mandangi, died of malaria after repeated medical complaints were ignored.
Ulaka criticized the Odisha government for failing to address these issues and demanded immediate action. He urged the Prime Minister and home minister to intervene, conduct thorough investigations, and hold accountable those responsible for negligence.
The motion also called for improved hostel security, including CCTV surveillance, round-the-clock monitoring, regular medical checkups, and enhanced victim support services such as financial aid, legal assistance, and rehabilitation. “The House must act now to protect women, children, and tribal communities in Odisha and ensure justice,” Ulaka said.
