Rourkela/Keonjhar: The last rites of Prabin Kumar Panda, a 29-year-old engineer from Rourkela who collapsed and died during a 25-km walking test for foresters and forest guards on Tuesday, were performed at Vedvyas crematorium here on Wednesday. His younger brother, Prasanna, a scientist based in Gujarat, lit the funeral pyre.
In Sundargarh, to avoid the scorching heat, 79 candidates reported at Bhawanipur sports complex at 4:30 am on Wednesday. After initial screening, 59 qualified candidates completed their 25-km walk between 6:15 am and 10:15 am. “All required tests for the posts were completed early as planned,” said Rabinarayan Sahoo, ADM (Sundargarh).
In Keonjhar district, the last rites Byomkesh Naik (28), who fell ill after completing the 25-km walking test, and was later declared dead at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, were performed on Tuesday evening.
“He had no health issues and was perfectly fine,” said his wife Nirupama, a primary school teacher in Patna block. She demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and adequate compensation from the govt.
After his body was brought from the hospital to his native Ostopanga village, Naik’s two-year-old daughter kept telling her inconsolable mother, “Don’t cry. Father will come back.”
“They made candidates walk in the scorching sun without providing drinking water. When he fell ill, he was transported in an ambulance lacking oxygen support,” alleged Pramila Naik, the deceased’s mother.
Following the incident, the forest department rescheduled the tests to begin at 5:30 am. “My son’s life could have been saved if the new timing was implemented earlier,” Pramila added.
