Unable to deliver, rare C-section op on monkey

A pregnant monkey underwent a C-section surgery to give birth to its baby which was delivered stillborn. Residents of Thane found the bonnet macaque in labour, lying unconscious while trying unsuccesfully to give birth on Sunday.
Forest officials were informed after which the simian was rescued by a team from Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) where Dr Kirti Sathe, a veterinarian, performed the life-saving C-section operation.
“The monkey seemed to be in labour pain when rescued,” said Pawan Sharma from RAWW. The mother was put into an ambulance and taken to Himi’s Bark Veterinary Clinic at Vikhroli. “She kept passing out and regaining consciousness,” he said.
Dr Priti Sathe who assisted in the nearly hour-long surgery said that the surgery helped bring out the stillborn baby, “naturally deformed”. The surgery, in turn, helped save the mother macaque.
“A C-section in a monkey is rare,” said Dr Priti Sathe.Naturally, the mother is trauma, the vet said, adding that she is slowly recovering. —Alex Fernandes
