Keonjhar: A 49-year-old anganwadi worker was found hanging at the Naradapur anganwadi centre in the district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased, identified as Manika Barik, was discovered by locals after the centre remained closed during working hours. Police said Barik, who lived with her elderly parents, was unmarried and had been supporting the education of her two brothers and two relatives.
Sources said Barik had purchased a rope from a nearby shop, ostensibly for drying clothes, before the incident. She had not called any children to the centre on Tuesday, breaking from her usual routine.
“We have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. A suicide note was found at the scene and is being examined,” said Debaki Nayak, inspector in-charge of Champua police station.
Family members revealed that Barik had been suffering from heart disease since her school days and was recently diagnosed with kidney problems. They alleged she had been under mental stress for the past few years.
While the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations suggest suicide due to mental stress. Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
