Telangana tunnel collapse: Rescue operation underway, damaged conveyor likely to be operational

NEW DELHI: The rescue operation inside the partially collapsed SLBC tunnel continued at a rapid pace on the 11th day of the accident on Tuesday, with officials confident that the damaged conveyor belt would be functional by the end of the day.
The search for the eight trapped individuals continues without success, with rescue teams operating round-the-clock in three shifts, according to an official’s statement. Debris removal and dewatering operations remain ongoing.
Officials anticipate the damaged conveyor belt to become operational today, which would facilitate efficient removal of debris and muck from the tunnel.
On Monday evening, a police representative indicated that the state administration is considering the deployment of robots for rescue operations to ensure the safety of rescue personnel.
The rescue teams face significant challenges due to substantial amounts of slush and water inside the tunnel.
Since February 22, eight individuals, comprising engineers and workers, have been trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project tunnel. Teams from NDRF, Indian Army, Navy and various agencies continue their persistent rescue efforts.
Nagarkurnool Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Gaikwad stated on Monday evening that robot deployment is under consideration to protect the rescue teams’ safety.
Chief minister A Revanth Reddy, during his Sunday tunnel inspection, advised officials to consider using robots inside the tunnel if required, prioritising the rescue teams’ safety.
During discussions with rescue officials on Sunday, Revanth Reddy acknowledged the uncertainty regarding the trapped persons’ location and assured that his government is implementing all possible measures to accelerate the rescue operation.
He indicated that the rescue efforts would accelerate once the conveyor belt repairs are completed.
The CM further assured the government’s commitment to resolving the situation and providing support to the affected families.
