Caretaker held for strangling elderly man to death | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Death of an elderly man in Dhenkanal, initially perceived as an accidental fall from bed on Friday, turned out to be well-planned murder, with police arresting the deceased’s caretaker for the crime on Sunday.
Police said the accused, Deepak Biswal (21), strangled Girish Rout (73) to death by strangulation at the victim’s residence in Rameswarpur under Dhenkanal Town police station limits on Friday night. The motive behind the murder was Biswal’s grudge towards Rout for alleged ill-treatment, police said.
The deceased, who was largely confined to his bed due to advanced age, employed Biswal as his caretaker about six months ago. “On Friday night, Rout was alone with his family members away to attend a relative’s wedding. Biswal was looking for an opportunity to avenge the elderly man’s alleged mistreatment. He strangled the victim to death with a piece of cloth,” SP (Dhenkanal) Abhinav Sonkar told TOI.
Police investigation revealed that Biswal attacked the sleeping Rout, resulting in a struggle during which Rout fell from the bed, sustaining a head injury. The accused then overpowered and killed the victim. “In an attempt to conceal the crime and prove he was innocent, the accused transported the elderly man to hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Biswal contacted Rout’s family, claiming that the death resulted from an accidental fall from bed,” Sonkar said.
Police became suspicious upon noticing marks around Rout’s neck and determined the head injury was inconsistent with an accidental fall. “During questioning, Biswal confessed to the crime,” the SP said.
