Hyderabad: A major fire broke out on Friday evening in a residential building in Neknampur village on the outskirts of the city claiming the lives of three family members. Police said the victims likely died of suffocation.
The deceased have been identified as Sijira Khatoon, 7, Sahana Khatoon, 40, and Jameela Khatoon, 70. According to police, five others trapped inside the building were rescued safely. The building has a kirana store and parking space on the ground floor, with four flats above it, where families of four siblings reside.
Fire officers confirmed that the blaze started on the ground floor of the three-storey building. The fire spread quickly, engulfing upper floors and giving out thick smoke. Residents alerted emergency services and fire tenders rushed to the scene, successfully containing the fire. However, smoke had already spread to the upper floors.
Police suspect that an electrical short-circuit in a kirana store on the ground floor may have sparked the fire, which led to the explosion of three gas cylinders as well. Police are verifying whether they were inside the kirana store or in the parking area.
Younus Khan, one of the residents, jumped from the building to escape the fire and suffered multiple fractures. He was taken to Osmania General Hospital where doctors said he is in a stable condition.
Firefighters, while conducting a search of the building, discovered a flat locked from the inside. After breaking open the door, they found three family members unconscious. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Authorities believe the victims may have locked themselves inside to avoid the smoke, which ultimately led to their suffocation. A case has been filed and further investigations are on, police said. The rescued people are in a state of shock and have not been able to provide any details about the incident, police said.
