Advocates hold a protest; seek diversity in judicial appointments – The Times of India

Chennai: A section of advocates staged a protest on Friday, demanding diversity in judicial appoointments, and adequate representation for lawyers from all segments of the society in the appointment of judges to Madras high court.
“We are not against any particular community. But we demand social justice in judicial appointments,” they said during the protest organised near the high court.
Messages are spreading that there is complete bias in choosing the candidates for elevation as judges of the high court, and “a list of five candidates from a particular community is being shortlisted, completely bypassing eligible candidates from other communities,” they alleged.
They said advocates affiliated with various bar associations across Tamil Nadu have been raising their voices for the last 20 years, demanding transparency in the appointment of judges to the Madras high court.
“We are demanding proper representation for all sections of advocates and ensuring social justice in the appointments,” they said.
