Centre for intestine rehab opens | Chennai News – The Times of India

Chennai: A Centre for Intestinal Rehabilitation and Nutrition Support was inaugurated at Rela Hospital here on Friday.
The centre will offer comprehensive care for rare intestinal failures and complex gastrointestinal disorders, particularly in preterm babies who are not medically fit for intestinal transplants.
The team will provide home-based care and support to reduce hospitalisation time and costs, the hospital said.
Preterm babies will have to be monitored for at least two years until they gain up to 9 kg for a transplant, he said. While intestinal failure is rare in children, it significantly affects preterm infants.
“Our vision is to provide a comprehensive range of unique treatment services to children, thus minimising the need for transplantation,” said Dr Mohammed Rela, senior transplant surgeon.
