Chennai Corporation to raise number of zones to 20 | Chennai News – The Times of India

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation will increase its zones from 15 to 20 by reorganising administrative boundaries to improve civic services and ensure equitable distribution of resources across the city, where the population has touched 85 lakh.
A statement from municipal administration and water supply department said the city’s zones were last redrawn in 2011, when 42 local bodies were merged, expanding the corporation’s area to 426 square km. However, the existing zones have uneven population distribution, with older central zones recording higher density — making uniform service delivery a challenge.
Announced in the assembly in 2022, the restructuring will realign administrative boundaries based on population, voter list, road density, tax assessments and other factors.
The reshuffle is aimed at improving services such as waste management, water supply, streetlights, stormwater drains, and road maintenance, especially in high-density areas.
