KRISHNAGIRI: The Krishnagiri district police shot an accused in the leg on Friday after he attacked two cops with a knife and attempted to escape during his arrest in connection with a rape case. Another accused sustained a broken leg after falling while trying to flee.
According to the police, a 35-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman from Tirupattur visited a hill behind the new bus stand in Krishnagiri around 3 pm on Wednesday. As they reached the top, four drunk men carrying knives surrounded them. They kept them at knife point and robbed the woman of her gold chain and earrings. They robbed the man of his mobile phone. Two of them raped her while the other two recorded the assault on their mobile phones.
They assaulted the man and recorded a video making it appear as if he was involved in the sexual activity. They threatened to distribute the video if he spoke about what had happened.
The woman and the man later descended the hill in distress. Locals noticed her crying and inquired about the incident. She narrated the ordeal but left without filing a police complaint. Upon learning of the crime, Krishnagiri Town police launched an investigation, traced the survivor to Tirupattur and obtained her complaint.
After an inquiry, the police identified the accused as Kalaiarasan, 21, and Abhishek, 20, of Palayapettai in Krishnagiri, who committed the robbery while Suresh, 22, and Narayanan, 21, of Krishnagiri who raped her. Kalaiarasan and Abhishek were arrested on Wednesday while Suresh and Narayanan were absconding.
On Friday, the police received information that the two were hiding near Ponmalai Kuttai Perumal Temple in the Krishnagiri taluk police station limits.
When the police tried to arrest them, Suresh and Narayanan attacked two cops, Kumar and Vijayakumar, with knives and tried to escape. The police first fired a warning shot in the air. However, as the accused continued to run, officers shot Suresh in the right knee, bringing him down. Narayanan fell and fractured his right leg, according to the police.
The injured cops were taken to Krishnagiri Govt Medical College Hospital. Suresh and Narayanan were also admitted to the same hospital.
Krishnagiri district superintendent of police P Thangadurai told reporters that cops had opened fire in self-defence while nabbing the accused. He added that Suresh had two prior assault cases against him.
