Argument with couple on beach: Cop issued warning

CHENNAI: A policeman, who questioned a woman advocate and her male friend while they were chatting on the beach in Srinivasapuram on Wednesday night, did not violate any rules and was not involved in moral policing, the police department ruled after an inquiry. However, the policeman was issued a warning.
Officials said the policeman, Rajkumar, attached to the Fore Shore Estate law and order police station, would be assigned some other duty than patrolling in the area.
The policeman, who was on patrol, spotted the couple sitting in a dimly lit area of the beach around 8.30pm on Wednesday. When he questioned the couple, the lawyer, who is married, and her friend studying at a law college in Andhra Pradesh picked up an argument with him. The cop left the place soon.
A senior police officer conducted an inquiry after a video of the incident released by the advocate went viral. Many people who saw the video demanded legal action against the policeman for being “involved in moral policing.”
But during the inquiry, Rajkumar submitted two other videos which revealed that he had not violated any rules, a police officer said. A sub-inspector of police who was with the policeman also had videographed the incident.
As the policeman did not violate any rules and was not involved in moral policing, no departmental action was initiated, officials said.
