Rs 30,000 each given to Chikiti hooch tragedy victims’ kin

Berhampur: Ganjam administration provided Rs 30,000 from the Red Cross Fund to next of kin of each person, who died in the Chikiti hooch tragedy that took place in Aug last year.
The district administration informed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) about this on Jan 25 after the commission sought a report about compensation for hooch tragedy victims. SP (Berhampur) also informed NHRC about the chargesheet filed against 10 accused on Nov 16 last year.
The NHRC closed the hooch tragedy case on Tuesday after receiving the report from the administration, stating that further intervention by the commission was not required.
“Police report revealed that monetary relief of Rs 30,000 has been provided to the next of kin of the deceased, and further compensation will be provided by the DLSA after receiving the succession certificates. The victim’s family members have applied for the legal heir certificate to the tehsildar, Chikiti, which is under process. Further, a preliminary chargesheet has been filed against 10 accused, and as such, further intervention by the commission is not required,” the commission said on Tuesday.
Radhakant Tripathy, a human rights activist, filed a petition before the NHRC, appealing for the commission’s intervention to provide compensation to the victims of the hooch tragedy.
Five persons died after allegedly consuming the country-made liquor at Jenapur in Chikiti in Aug last year. Some others also fell ill. The deceased were identified as Jura Behera, Lokanath Behera, Laxman Behera, Pradeep Behera, and Baya Sethi.
