Berhampur: Four migrant workers from Ganjam district allegedly stranded without salary in Muscat, Oman, sought assistance from the state govt for their safe return to their native places. The stranded labourers are from different villages in Ganjam, Polasara, and Sanakhemundi blocks.
The labourers were working as plumbers in a construction company in Oman and had gone there through an agency in Nov last year. “Though four months have elapsed since they started working, they have not received their monthly salaries,” alleged Indira Sethi of Tarinipalli in Ganjam block, whose son Basant is stranded in Oman.
The plight of the migrant workers came to light after they narrated their conditions to their parents over video calls. Worried, their parents approached the district labour office (DLO) in Chhatrapur on Tuesday and requested for their safe return.
“I am very worried about the future of my son. He has no money to return. Their documents are with the company authorities. He, along with others, want to return,” she said.
The DLO, Chhatrapur conducted an inquiry after receiving their complaints. “I have submitted the inquiry report to the labour commission through the district administration for further action,” said Barsarani Jena, DLO, Chhatrapur. Jena said she received complaints from two migrant labourers stranded in Oman from her area — Ganjam and Polasara blocks. The DLO, Berhampur, is inquiring about stranded labourers from Sanakhemundi block, sources said.
