CMC starts desiltation of drains two months in advance

Cuttack: In a proactive move to tackle waterlogging, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has initiated desiltation of drains earlier than usual. The process, which usually starts in April, has been advanced to Feb this year and will continue until June, aiming to clear 377 km of drains before the monsoon. Deputy commissioner and in-charge of sanitation, Swetapadma Satpathy, said “Early desiltation is crucial for mitigating waterlogging issues in the city. We have taken a strategic decision to start the process earlier this year”.
CMC has formed a dedicated team to oversee the work and ensure smooth execution of the desiltation drive. So far, more than 30 wards have been covered, with nearly 156 km of drains already cleared informed Satpathy. “Waterlogging has been a persistent issue in Cuttack during the rains. By advancing the desiltation work, we aim to minimise disruptions and ensure efficient drainage. The progress so far has been satisfactory, and we will continue to monitor and expedite the work,” Satpathy added.
CMC has urged residents to cooperate by refraining from dumping solid waste into drains, which often leads to blockages. The corporation is also deploying additional resources to accelerate the process in vulnerable areas. With systematic planning and timely intervention, CMC hopes to provide much-needed relief to residents of Cuttack and ensure a smoother drainage system during the rainy season. Soumya Patra , a resident of Badambadi, “Every year, our area gets flooded because of clogged drains. We are unable to move out of our house and filthy water often flows inside our houses. I hope this early cleaning will help mitigate the initial monsoon troubles.”
Pragnya Sonal , a resident of Bajrakabati area, “It’s good that CMC has started the work early. But they should also ensure regular maintenance so that the drains don’t get blocked again.” Swayam Khandai , a resident of Jobra area said, “Timely action is necessary, but people also need to be responsible. If we stop throwing garbage in drains, the problem will reduce significantly. The CMC must ensure it, if required fine must be imposed on errant violators”.
