Navi Mumbai: The Raigad local crime branch arrested six persons, including two police constables, who connived with a gang of dacoits to target two jewellers from Nagpur and Kamothe, robbing them of Rs 1.5 crore cash. The key accused in the case had offered to sell 7kg gold worth Rs 5 crore at a discounted price.
Two more accused, including another police constable, are being traced, said Raigad SP Somnath Gharge.
“The incident occurred on Feb 3, and the jewellers registered an FIR of cheating on Feb 8 at Alibaug police station after learning that it was a planned dacoity by the gang in connivance with the constables,” said SP Gharge.
The key accused, Samadhan Pinjari (20), an employee with a private firm in Alibaug, contacted the Nagpur-based jeweller Namdev Hulge. On the day of the crime, two constables, Sameer Mhatre and Vicky Sable, arrived on a bike and demanded a police check of the car. They told jeweller Hulge and his associate to step out of the car, leaving their bag in the car after which accused Deep Gaikwad sped away with the cash bag.
