MUMBAI: In a notable enhancement to student welfare facilities, IIT Kharagpur recently inaugurated the Zen Lounge, a yoga and meditation hall within the SNIG Girls Hostel.
This facility aims to promote mindfulness, well-being and mental wellness amongst students, representing a significant step towards comprehensive education at the institute.
The initiative was made possible through the support of Ms. Viji Narayanan, an alumna who studied at IIT Kharagpur from 1986-1991 and resided in the same hostel. Her initiative forms part of the Women in Leadership programme, established by Shri Partha Ghosh and Shri Asoke Deysarkar from IIT KGP Alumni Foundation USA. The virtual lounge enables alumni to contribute to their alma mater by spending time weekly to mentor students.
“IIT Kharagpur is a place where academic rigor is complemented by the personal growth of its students. The Zen Lounge is a reflection of this philosophy. I hope it will offer all who walk through its doors a peaceful retreat and a chance to nurture both mind and body, balancing the pressures of academic life,” said Ms. Viji Narayanan during her address at the inauguration.
The facility features modern amenities with dedicated spaces for yoga, meditation and reflection. Its design incorporates natural light and peaceful surroundings, offering students a tranquil environment for mindfulness practices. The space will host various activities including guided meditation sessions, yoga workshops and wellness discussions.
Prof. Rintu Banerjee, Deputy Director, IIT Kharagpur, emphasised the growing importance of mental health in the academic community. “We are delighted to introduce the Zen Lounge as a space where students can pause, reflect, and find moments of calm in the midst of their rigorous academic schedule.
Ms. Narayanan’s thoughtful contribution will go a long way in encouraging the importance of mindfulness and well-being among our students.
The first-of-its-kind initiative among IITs, the Zen Lounge reflects our commitment to fostering mental health and holistic wellness among students. By encouraging the practice of yoga and meditation, we aim to contribute to a healthier and more balanced student community at IIT Kharagpur.”
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deans, faculty members, students and distinguished alumni, including Ms. Narayanan. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a tour of the facilities.
The Zen Lounge demonstrates IIT Kharagpur’s dedication to developing well-rounded individuals. It combines Western lifestyle medicine with Vedic principles for preventative healthcare, supporting mental wellness comprehensively.
The facility provides a space for self-reflection and stress relief through yoga and meditation. The Virtual Lounge component delivers wellness sessions via zoom, including yoga, meditation and mentorship programmes. The initiative focuses on providing lifestyle management skills and alumni mentorship for career guidance, internship opportunities and cultural adjustment at IIT.
