Berhampur: Cyber fraudsters duped around 12 residents of silk city and adjoining areas of Rs 2.50 crore in Jan, police data revealed.
“A total of 12 cases were registered in the cyber and economic offences police station here, based on the complaints lodged by the victims. Investigation is ongoing, and we are trying to recover the amounts,” said SP (Berhampur), Saravana Vivek M.
“During the period, police froze accounts containing around Rs 22 lakh belonging to the criminals after the cases were registered,” he said.
The SP said they recovered Rs 1.10 lakh on Tuesday, which was allegedly looted through a fraudulent online transaction on Nov 4 last year. The recovered amount was handed over to the victim. He said the accused are still at large. A teacher couple lost around Rs 35 lakh last week to cyber scammers, who posed as officers of RBI, a Supreme Court judge, and a police officer.
In a bid to check the growing cases of cyber fraud, the SP said they have asked bankers to keep an eye on big transactions and withdrawals.
“We appeal to the people not to invest their money for quick gains,” he said. At the same time, he also advised people to report to the police immediately if they come across such fraudsters.
