Chennai: The Tamil Nadu school education department is planning to conduct a state learning achievement survey in all govt and govt-aided schools from Feb 4 to 6.
More than 10 lakh students from 45,924 schools studying in Classes III, V, and VIII will be assessed as part of the survey.
The survey is conducted to identify learning gaps in various disciplines and plan academic interventions. The test will be conducted for 90 minutes for all three classes.
“This is the first time we are conducting the learning achievement survey on such a large scale. As part of the survey, every govt and govt-aided school will be assessed,” an official from the school education department said.
In each class, 20 students will take the test, and students will be selected based on a random sampling method.
“The questions will test comprehension skills and learning outcomes for these classes. It will help us bring evidence-based reforms in curriculum, pedagogy and teacher training,” the official added.
Class III students have to answer 35 questions (10 questions each from Tamil, English and maths, and five questions from environmental studies). Class V students will answer 45 questions, while Class VIII students will answer 50 questions during the test.
Questions will be in Tamil and English for both mediums and will be based on the previous grade and the first term of the current grade.
Students will get grade-appropriate comprehension passages that assess the reading and comprehension skills of students.
The survey will be conducted by field investigators drawn from final-year students in arts and science colleges and engineering colleges.
