97% of 2L+ ‘delayed’ birth certs given to Rohingyas: Kirit; seeks forensic probe | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: BJP’s Kirit Somaiya has urged chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to order a forensic probe into the approximately 2 lakh birth certificates issued by local tehsildar offices across the state under special provisions. Somaiya has claimed that 97% of these certificates were granted to Bangladeshi Rohingya Muslims.
In his written communication to Fadnavis, who also handles the state home portfolio, Somaiya highlighted that 2.1 lakh delayed birth certificate applications were processed by tehsildars and sub-divisional magistrates under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act. “More than 97% of these birth applications belong to one community. Muslims seem to have come from Bangladesh,” Somaiya claimed.
He further alleged that while most applications included Aadhaar card, PAN card, ration card, and school-leaving certificate, the majority lacked proper documentation to verify birthplace or date.
Somaiya claimed that govt authorities failed in document verification, and suggested that district collectors appoint a forensic expert — either a chartered accountant or lawyer — to authenticate the submitted documents.
