Rourkela: Four months after the Kumbhars lost their 14-year-old daughter to snakebite, tragedy struck the family again when the younger child died after accidentally eating rice laced with rat poison. The incident was reported from Riun village in Sundargarh district.
The poisoned rice was prepared by Sagar Kumbhar, the girl’s father, and kept in a bowl in the house to kill the rodents. Kiran (12), a Class V student of Riun primary school, was very hungry when she returned home from school on Monday afternoon. She found the bowl of rice and unaware that it contained rat poison, consumed it.
As Kiran’s condition worsened, her mother took her to Ispat General Hospital, where she died on Tuesday afternoon.
“We have registered an unnatural death case and investigation is on,” said S Das, assistant sub-inspector, Kuanrmunda police outpost.
The Kumbhars are left with an eight-year-old son.
