Rourkela: Bondamunda police arrested three more persons, including a receiver, in connection with a jewellery heist that took place at a railway quarter two months ago. The arrests comes two weeks after four gang members were arrested.
The arrested persons were identified as Akash Ray (26) and Tafazul Khan (28) from Birmitrapur, and Suraj Bansi (25) from Sitalpada under Uditnagar police station limits. Khan was the receiver of the stolen jewellery.
SP (Rourkela) Nitesh Wadhwani told a press conference that the robbery took place on Oct 19 at the residence of Dillip Kumar Panda (44), a junior railway engineer. Five unidentified miscreants broke into Panda’s quarters in Diesel colony by cutting through a window grill. The perpetrators tied up the occupants and looted gold and silver ornaments weighing around 380 to 400 grams, along with Rs 10,000 and important documents.
The investigation, involving dog squads and forensic teams, led to the arrest of four gang members — Susil Singh, Ajay Kumar, Sachin Mahato, and receiver Rabi Shankar Verma — on Dec 31. Police recovered 120 grams of gold ornaments, 40 g of silver ornaments, and Rs 70,000 during the arrests.
Further investigation and police remand of Singh led to the recovery of additional 27 g of gold ornaments and Rs 40,000 from his residence in Chhapra, Bihar. Singh’s interrogation revealed the involvement of Ray and Bansi, leading to their and Khan’s arrest.
Both Ray and Bansi have previous criminal records and were earlier arrested for property offences under Birmitrapur and Tangarpali police stations. Investigation continues to uncover possible involvement of the accused in other property crimes. The recovered items have been returned to Panda.
