Odisha to sign MoU for mega steel plant in Keonjhar: CM
Bhubaneswar: A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a mega steel plant in Keonjhar will be signed at the upcoming Utkarsh Odisha Make in Odisha programme in Bhubaneswar, scheduled for January 28 and 29, chief minister Mohan Majhi said on Tuesday.
In Nov, the CM announced a joint venture of Posco and JSW to establish a 5 MTPA steel plant in Keonjhar, days after the two companies entered into an agreement. The two companies in Oct announced that they signed a pact for a 5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) steel plant in India, besides collaborations in battery materials and renewable energy sectors.
In Aug, the govt formed a chief secretary-led taskforce to establish a steel plant in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district. While Odisha has an estimated more than 5,900 million tonnes of iron ore, Keonjhar accounts for a lion’s share of 2,500 MT.
Posco, which ranks as the world’s seventh largest steel producer, entered into a MoU with the Odisha govt in 2005 to establish a 12 MTPA steel facility in Jagatsinghpur. However, the South Korean firm withdrew from the project in 2017. Subsequently, JSW, led by Sajjal Jindal, the world’s 12th largest steel manufacturer, committed to developing a 13.2 MTPA plant at the same location.
Speaking after inaugurating a newly-constructed bridge at Jhumpara in his home district Keonjhar, Majhi said the govt is giving huge priority to the long-overdue development of Keonjhar. “Efforts are on for development of various sectors such as education and health in the district,” he said.
The inaugurated bridge is built over a canal on the Jhumpara-Ukhunda road, connecting Jhumpara and Sri Rampur villages. It will benefit 5,000 to 10,000 people daily from the nearby areas. The bridge is 67 metres long with an approach road of 175 metres.
