Hot And Humid Weather: Brace for hot and humid weather till June 14: IMD | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: A day after the onset of southwest monsoon, most parts of the state reeled with gruelling heat and humidity on Sunday.
The weakened southwest monsoon, particularly the Bay of Bengal branch, has failed to bring widespread rainfall after its onset on Saturday, leaving residents to endure soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted that uncomfortable weather is likely to continue till June 14 due to sluggish progress of monsoon.
The IMD forecast said thunderstorm activities with lightning are likely to continue in one or two places in several districts but it may not help in providing relief from the hot and humid conditions. “Gradual rise in maximum temperature by 2-3 degrees Celsius during the next three days and no large change thereafter at many places over the districts of Odisha. Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of the state,” the forecast said.
Nuapada was the hottest place in the state recording 43C on Sunday while 16 places recorded temperatures above 40C. With 56% humidity and 39.6C temperature, the heat index in Bhubaneswar was 58C on Sunday. The measure of discomfort felt due to increased heat and humidity is known as heat index. The heat index in Puri was 53 degrees, 62 degrees in Balasore, 54 degrees in Chandabali, 48 degrees in Paradip and 40 degrees in Gopalpur during 3 pm on Sunday.
“The weather has become unbearable. The humidity is making it difficult to carry out even routine activities,” said Sangita Nayak, a homemaker.
Director of IMD’s regional centre, Manorama Mohanty, said, “We are monitoring the situation closely. But as of now, we expect the current hot and humid conditions to persist until mid-June. We advise people to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours.”
Apurba Sethi, a roadside vendor said, “Stepping outside feels like walking into an oven. Not many people are coming out from their homes. We are waiting for monsoon to provide some relief.”
