Woman found hanging; father alleges dowry harassment | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: A 20-year-old woman, who got married in July last year, allegedly hanged herself at her home in Ganjam district‘s Kalarapadar on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Puspa Sahu, wife of Rajendra Swain. The couple got married on July 15 last year. Sources said Rajendra, who works as a labourer in Chennai, had returned home last week. On Saturday night, after having dinner, they slept on the first floor. He, however, found her hanging early Sunday morning and informed the police and her parents.
After getting information, Patapur police reached the spot and sent the body to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for post-mortem. The cause of death would be known only after getting the post-mortem report, police said.
“The exact reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained,” said Dipti Ranjan Behera, inspector in-charge, Patapur police station. No suicide note was found.
Puspa’s father, Gangadhar Sahu of Chikili near Sheragada, however, alleged his daughter might have killed herself as her in-laws were demanding more dowry. “Though we gave all necessary household articles during her marriage, her in-laws demanded more dowry, including an immediate Rs 30,000. This led to frequent quarrels between them,” alleged Gangadhar.
Police said they have registered a case based on the complaint of the deceased’s father and started an inquiry.
