AIIMS Bhubaneswar: Patients and attendants seek wider approach road to AIIMS | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: A two-lane road that leads to AIIMS Bhubaneswar from National Highway-16 is causing problems for patients and attendants to reach the hospital due to its narrow width and several other bottlenecks.
The stretch, which is around 3-km long and starts from AIIMS square on NH-16, is quite busy, especially due to the inflow of patients and ambulances.
People visiting the hospital said the stretch usually witnesses frequent congestion. They demanded the road be expanded to at least three lanes with a dedicated corridor for ambulances.
The important stretch is also marred by the movement of stray cattle from nearby locality which often obstruct the movement of vehicles. Littering is another problem on the road.
The construction of a number of real estate projects in the vicinity of the hospital has made the stretch even busier. Local residents have raised concerns about the safety of patients and their attendants who travel on the narrow road.
“People from Khurda, Nayagarh and even the capital are gradually turning to the hospital for its health services. The inflow of patients from neighbouring states has also increased. The civic infrastructure needs to be improved accordingly,” Niraj Jena, a patient’s attendant, said.
The hospital administration has acknowledged the problem and has started talks with the local authorities to find a solution. “We have written to the Khurda district collector urging him to improve the civic services, especially sanitation,” a senior AIIMS administrator said.
He said the presence of stray cattle on the road can be dangerous for both animals and the vehicles, and can cause accidents and delays. “Littering not only makes the area look dirty and unhygienic but also poses a health risk to the patients and their attendants,” he added.
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor Sulochana Das said the problems are occurring as the area where AIIMS is located is beyond BMC limits. “We will take up the road issues with the appropriate authority while we will manage sanitation of the area,” she said.
