Airport: Boundary wall of Malkangiri airport collapses in rain | Bhubaneswar News

Koraput: A portion of the boundary wall of the newly constructed airport in Malkangiri collapsed on Friday night following heavy rain and thunderstorms. Preliminary reports indicate around 40 metres each of the wall on both the east and west sides of the airport collapsed during the downpour.
The collapse was discovered on Saturday morning and officials have visited the site to assess the damage and plan repairs.
“Immediate steps will be taken to reconstruct the boundary wall,” said a senior official of the public works department. Locals have raised concerns about the quality of construction, attributing the collapse to substandard works.
“This is not the first time the boundary wall of the airport has been damaged. Last year, two persons died after the wall collapsed on them. It is suspected such incidents are happening due to substandard work,” said Niranjan Haldar, vice-chairperson of Malkangiri block.
The airport, located in Katelgtuda under Goudaguda panchayat on the outskirts of Malkangiri town, is spread over 233 acres. The airport has a 1,620-m-long runway with a width of 30 m and was constructed at Rs 70 crore. The facility was inaugurated on Jan 9.
