16k & counting: Winter shelters provide warmth – Times of India
Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has rolled out an extensive network of winter shelters across the city to shield the homeless from the biting cold. These shelters — comprising permanent, temporary and innovative German hanger-style facilities — offer free lodging, blankets and meals to those in need.
“By Jan 2, a total of 16,233 people had sought refuge in these shelters,” said PMC commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar. “We have established 12 German hanger-style shelters, six permanent facilities and 11 temporary shelters to cater to the needs of the homeless,” he added.
Strategically located near public hotspots such as squares, railway stations and bus stands, the shelters ensure easy access for those in distress. With a total capacity to house over 907 people at any given time, the facilities are equipped with beds, blankets and basic sanitation amenities. Free food and medical aid are also provided as part of the initiative.
To ensure safety and order, the shelters are under constant CCTV surveillance with staff and security personnel deployed on-site. “Two blankets have been arranged for each occupant to provide additional warmth during the harsh winter nights,” Parashar said.
The public has been encouraged to play an active role in supporting this effort. “We urge citizens to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of these shelters and to come forward with donations of blankets, clothing and other essentials,” said a PMC official.
The shelters are set to remain operational until the end of February or until the weather improves with the PMC assuring that no effort will be spared in providing essential amenities during this critical period.
“The harsh winter calls for collective action. These shelters are not just facilities, they are lifelines for those battling the elements without a roof over their heads,” the municipal commissioner said.
