Patna: Several places in the state experienced a sharp drop in the mercury on Thursday, with both Dehri and Banka recording the temperature of 4.4 degrees Celsius in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperatures are expected to stay within the range of 6-14 degrees Celsius in most parts of the state during the next six days. The day or maximum temperature will likely increase from 14-17 degrees to 18-22 degrees during the next 48 hours.
Meteorologists report that the Westerly winds blowing from the mountainous regions are bringing cold air, resulting in a steady decline in the temperatures.
A ‘yellow alert’ for a cold day was issued for the northern districts of the state for Friday. A forecast of shallow to moderate fog was also made for isolated places across the state until January 4.
Banka and Dehri were the coldest places in the state on Thursday, followed by Aurangabad at 6.7 degrees Celsius, Buxar 7.1 degrees Celsius, Bhagalpur 7.6 degrees Celsius, and both Gaya and Arwal 7.8 degrees Celsius. A total of 20 cities in the state recorded a minimum temperature below 10 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD bulletin.
Patna registered a minimum temperature of 10.6 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 16.4 degrees, which was five notches below the normal range. A thin layer of fog was experienced in the state capital and moderate fog in some northern parts of the state on Thursday.
According to meteorologists, the minimum temperature of the season was recorded on December 15 in Jamui when the temperature dropped to 4.3 degrees Celsius. Kumar Gaurav, a weather scientist at Patna Meteorological Centre, said this winter season, no city has yet recorded cold day conditions. “A ‘cold day’ is declared when the maximum temperature is 4.5°C or more below normal and the minimum dips below 10°C,” he told this reporter.
“The chilly conditions will continue in the state with the minimum temperature staying in the range of 6-14 degrees Celsius until January 8, but the maximum temperature is likely to rise by 2-4 degrees from January 4. After a couple of days, the temperature will again plummet from January 7,” Gaurav said.
