MKCG axes 4 doctors, bars resident from entering hostel over assault on PG student | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Authorities of MKCG Medical College and Hospital here on Sunday terminated the services of four doctors and barred a second-year postgraduate resident doctor from entering the hostel for six months for allegedly assaulting a PG student on Dec 20 midnight.
“We cannot tolerate any indiscipline on the college premises and stringent action will be taken against those involved in unruly activities,” Suchitra Dash, dean and principal, said. “Following the direction of the director of medical education and training (DMET), the college during a council meeting on Dec 23 decided to take action against the five,” Dash added.
Of the four doctors, Purushottam Swain is an assistant professor (orthopaedic), and the rest are senior residents — Aryan Kumar Mohanty and Chinmay Pradhan — who worked as contractual doctors in the hospital’s paediatric department and Yashwant Veera (department of general surgery). The second-year PG resident (orthopaedic) was identified as Priyajeet Sahoo.
None of them were available for a comment.
According to the FIR lodged by the victim at Baidyanathpur police station on Dec 21, his seniors physically assaulted him near the hostel’s canteen around 12:30 am. Though the exact reason behind the assault was not disclosed by MKCG authorities, it allegedly took place over smoking cigarettes, which is prohibited in the canteen. Police have registered a case and issued notices to the accused.
A day after the incident, MKCG’s junior doctors’ association (JDA) prohibited the entry of the assistant professor and the three senior residents to a PG hostel. JDA has also decided on keeping the hostel canteen shut from 11:30 pm to 6 am every day to ensure the safety of residents and other staff. Additionally, the consumption of tobacco, cigarettes and any type of mass gathering have been strictly prohibited in the canteen.
