Women killed, 5 hurt as tempo rams into pedestrians in busy Ghatkopar market | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: A 35-year-old woman was killed on the spot, while five others were injured after a tempo driver lost control over the vehicle and dashed into them in a busy fish market in Ghatkopar’s Chirag Nagar area on Friday evening. The mishap was reminiscent of the BEST bus fatal accident in Kurla on Feb 9.
The tempo driver, Uttam Kharat (25), was arrested and booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’s sections for rash driving and causing death due to negligence. Police have sent him for a medical test to verify whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police are also investigating the incident to determine whether negligence, mechanical failure, or other factors led to the fatal mishap.
According to police, around 6.30pm, Kharat lost control of the tempo on Machhi Market Road and rammed into pedestrians. While Preeti Ritesh Patel, a resident of Bhagirathi Chawl in Parshiwadi, died on the spot, Reshma Sheikh (23), Marufa Sheikh (27), Tofa Uzhar Sheikh (38), Arbaz Shaikh (23), and Moharram Ali Abdul Rahim Sheikh (28) suffered injuries. The injured persons, all residents of Chirag Nagar, were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital; they are all in stable condition.
