Patna: Deputy chief minister Samrat Chaudhary assured investors at Bihar Business Connect-2024 that those setting up industrial units in the state would be provided with basic infrastructure facilities such as land, electricity, road connectivity and air connectivity. “So far, 8,000 acres of land have been acquired for industries, and next year, 10,000 acres of land will be available exclusively for industrial purposes,” he said.
Chaudhary, who also holds the finance portfolio, added that townships, colonies and industrial corridors would be developed in all nine divisions of Bihar to ensure industrial growth. In addition, he announced that the Centre had allocated Rs 236 crore to connect 10 cities, including Valmikinagar, Saharsa, Bhagalpur, Rajgir and Chhapra, with air services and airports.
Reflecting on the state’s progress, Chaudhary said since the formation of the NDA govt under CM Nitish Kumar’s leadership in 2005, Bihar has seen continuous improvement in its business environment. “With increasing investment in Bihar, employment opportunities are also growing rapidly,” he said.
Chaudhary also called for increased investment in the food processing industry, citing Bihar’s leading role in maize production. He pointed out that major production centres in Motihari, Khagaria and Samastipur make these districts ideal for establishing maize-based processing industries.
Both Chaudhary and another deputy CM, Vijay Kumar Sinha, took the opportunity to criticise previous non-NDA govts for Bihar’s stagnant industrial growth, particularly during the Lalu-Rabri era. They argued that while Bihar had historically been business-friendly, the state’s image had been tarnished by caste politics. Chaudhary contrasted this with the current NDA leadership, saying that Bihar is now moving forward. “Gone are the days when markets used to shut down in the evening and investors were afraid of kidnapping and murder for ransom. Now, the double-engine govt gives a guarantee of all facilities and protection,” he said.
Chaudhary also outlined several major initiatives to boost state’s industrial prospects. He highlighted the development of Sonepur as an industrial hub and announced the construction of five large dams to address flood issues and generate electricity. “While water released from Nepal used to create havoc in various districts, better water management is solving this issue,” he said.
Echoing Chaudhary’s remarks, Sinha criticised the RJD, saying that between 1990 and 2005, Bihar’s industry sector was weakened due to an unorganised govt. However, he pointed to the state’s resurgence under the current leadership. “The environment is favourable and in this double-engine govt under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Nitish, I invite you to participate in our growth and not just be a spectator,” Sinha said.
