BJD MP calls for wider consultation on ‘one nation, one election’ plan | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra on Thursday called for a broader consultation on the “one nation, one election” initiative before its nationwide implementation.
“More comprehensive consultation is essential, particularly regarding ‘one nation, one election’. It is crucial to contemplate the implications of scenarios involving a lack of majority, a hung Parliament, or assembly,” Patra told TOI.
He additionally questioned the contingency plans if the govt loses confidence mid-term. “All these aspects require thorough deliberation before implementing one nation, one election in the country,” Patra said.
The Rajya Sabha MP elaborated that numerous crucial issues, which are constitutionally significant, remain unaddressed in ‘one nation, one election’. “I believe extensive consultation and dialogue must be conducted with political parties,” he said.
The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the ‘one nation, one election’ Bill for presentation in the ongoing winter session of Parliament with opposition parties further demanding deliberations.
The bill facilitating unified elections across the country has been a long-standing agenda of the ruling BJP. Upon implementation, the Lok Sabha, assembly, and urban as well as rural local body elections will be conducted in the same year.
