Death toll in Mohana accident climbs to six | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: Death toll in the Chiding ghat accident near Mohana in Gajapati district rose to six, with two more women succumbing to their injuries Thursday. Sita Bhuyan (55) and Sanju Bhuyan (54), who were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, respectively, after being critically injured in the accident, died during treatment, police said.
On Wednesday, four people — Basanti Bhuyan (65), Chandrma Bhuyan (61), Radha Kudumba (58), and Haribandhu Gamang (60) — died in different hospitals, police said. All the victims, residents of Kikisingh near Ramagiri and relatives of each other, were going to Gaibali village near Chandragiri, about 70 km from their village, to attend the last rites of one of their other relatives when the accident took place, police said.
Six people, including five women, have been killed so far, and 24 others — five of them seriously — were injured in the accident, said Basant Kumar Sethi, inspector in-charge of Mohana police station. Most of the victims sustained fractures and head injuries and were admitted to the surgery ward, said a doctor at the medical college.
Though the exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained, police suspected the vehicle might have overturned after a sudden brake was applied. Police said the ill-fated vehicle was seized. Its driver, who was unhurt in the accident, escaped from the spot. Transport minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena on Monday night visited the patients at the medical college and hospital here. He asked the hospital authorities to take proper care of the patients and ordered an inquiry into the accident.
Balaram Gamanga (17), who lost his father Haribandhu in the accident, said 36 people, most of them women, were travelling in the vehicle to attend the dashah (tenth day of the death) function of his relatives at Gaibali, about 70 km away. “They rented the vehicle from Gopalpur near his village and planned to return the same day,” he said. “We were stunned when we came to know that my father, along with five of his relatives, died in the accident,” said Balaram. Mahendra Bhuyan, an outsourcing employee at the medical college and hospital here, also lost his mother, Sita, in the accident. “His mother was in critical condition and admitted to the hospital at about 4 pm. She, however, died at 9 am on Thursday,” he said.
