Cuttack’s Box Drain Project: Transforming Urban Drainage and Sanitation |

Cuttack: After grappling with waterlogging and sanitation woes for decades, Cuttack has taken a significant leap towards the better with the inauguration of its ambitious box drain project. Designed to revamp the city’s ageing drainage infrastructure, the project promises to transform the urban landscape and bring much-needed relief to its residents.
For years, monsoon have brought misery to the people of Cuttack, as flooded streets and clogged drains disrupted daily life in the city. However, the completion of the box drain project marks a turning point. Spanning 2.8 kilometers from Pattapola to Chhatrabazar, the newly constructed stormwater drainage system aims to tackle waterlogging, improve sanitation, and ease traffic congestion.
The box drain project is a modern drainage system designed to solve waterlogging and sanitation problems in Cuttack. It uses strong concrete box drains to ensure rainwater flows smoothly, without clogging the drains or letting out foul smell.
The Rs 452 crore project, implemented under the Odisha Integrated Sanitation Improvement Project (OISIP) with assistance from JICA, goes beyond just functional upgrades. With wide roads, dedicated footpaths, and green medians atop the drains, it blends utility with urban aesthetics. Residents are already witnessing the benefits, as areas once inundated during heavy rains remain dry and accessible.
Box drain project has brought significant improvement to traffic flow and the drainage system in areas like Professorpara, Chhtrabazar and Pattapola and residents are appreciating the positive changes.
“Earlier, traffic jams were a regular occurrence. But now the roads are clear, and water no longer overflows during rains,” said Dillip Nayak a resident of Professorpara, highlighting the project’s benefits.
Amit Biswal, a resident of Gamadia added that foul smell coming from the open drain has now stopped due to closing of the drain, which has also reduced mosquito breeding.
“Travelling through this area has become so much smoother. We no longer face delays due to waterlogging or traffic congestion,” said a daily commuter from Pattapola.
Following the success of box drain project, mayor Subash Singh said there are plans for similar transformative projects in other parts of the city.
“We have five more projects that had been approved by the previous BJD govt. Among these, major developments are planned in Jhola Sahi and Rajabagicha. These will be quite similar to the box drain project, focusing on covering open drains and improving urban living conditions,” Singh said.
