Gaya: More than 8,000 Buddhist devotees from around 31 countries have gathered in Bodh Gaya for participating in the 11-day Tipitaka (holy text) chanting, being held under the sacred Bodhi tree on world heritage Mahabodhi Mahavihara premises since Monday, even as the visit of Tibetan Buddhists’ spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama, this season remains uncertain.
The ambassador of United States in India, Eric Garcetti, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the event, which is witnessing participation of monks, nuns, spiritual leaders and diplomatic representatives from India, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Korea and many European countries.
The Tipitaka chanting will be followed by 10-day Kagyu Monlam Chenmo prayers, commencing on December 14, when good number of devotees, especially from Tibet and European countries, are expected to participate.
During the Tipitaka chanting ceremony, organized by International Tipitaka chanting council and Light of Buddhadharma Foundation International (LBDFI), devotees chant ‘sutras’ from the Buddhist holy text, which is originally in Pali. But translated version of the holy book has been provided to each participant in their own language.
According to the chanting council, total 8,490 devotees have got their registration done for the event.
Executive director of LBDFI, Wangmo Dixey, said being the sacred place, where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, Bodh Gaya has been spreading the message of peace, compassion and harmony across the globe since long.
“At a time when the world is shaken by wars, the timeless words of Buddha are able to guide humanity towards inner peace, mutual understanding and everlasting harmony. Hence, participation of such a large number of devotees from abroad, sitting together and offering prayers for ‘world peace’ holds significance in the present scenario.”
