Elderly Man Arrested for Setting Son and Daughter-in-Law on Fire Over Money in Cuttack |

Cuttack: An elderly man was detained for allegedly setting his son and daughter-in-law on fire over a monetary dispute in the Godisahi area of Cuttack on Saturday night. While the woman died, the son is in ICU in a critical condition.
Police said on Saturday evening, Gobardhan Raut (66) demanded Rs 5,000 from his son Dinabandhu (39) and daughter-in-law Sashmita (31) to meet his expenses. When they refused, a heated argument ensued.
“Later, he brought petrol and wrapped cloth around a stick to set fire. Around 10 pm, when Dinabandhu and Sashmita were having dinner, Gobardhan poured petrol over them and set them on fire,” said Jagmohan Meena, DCP, Cuttack.
As the victims cried for help, neighbours rushed to the spot, managed to extinguish the flames, and rescued them in critical condition. The duo was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Later, the daughter-in-law was shifted to a city-based private hospital.
“The woman suffered over 90% burns and was declared dead on Sunday morning, while her husband, Dinabandhu, who suffered 70% burns, remains in critical condition in the ICU,” said Meena.
The autopsy was conducted at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack and a murder case has been lodged at Baranaga police station. “A scientific team was pressed into action and collected samples from the spot, which will be sent to the laboratory for testing. The accused has been detained. As he suffered burn injuries on his hand, he is undergoing treatment at SCB. We are investigating the matter and he will be arrested soon,” Meena added.
