BJP and BJD Engage in Heated Accusations Over Governance in Odisha | Bhubaneswar News
WAR OF WORDS
Bhubaneswar: A war of words erupted between Odisha’s ruling BJP and the opposition BJD over the five-month performance of the Mohan Majhi-led govt.
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the state govt’s initiatives for women, farmers and various other sections of society, BJD MLA and deputy leader of opposition, Prasanna Acharya, took a dig at the BJP govt. He claimed that its only achievement was “changing colours”, referring to the administration’s decision to modify uniforms for students and nurses, as well as the colour of govt-run LAccMI buses. In response, revenue minister Suresh Pujari hit back, accusing the BJD of being the real “colour-changing” party.
While addressing the people, Modi on Friday praised the Majhi-led govt, saying, “Majhiji is touring different parts of Odisha to connect with people and understand their issues. As soon as our govt was formed in Odisha, we took steps for mothers and sisters, launching the Subhadra scheme to empower women. I am proud that Odisha’s tribal daughter Draupadi Murmu is now the President. Her journey will motivate generations. Several initiatives for tribal welfare have been launched in Odisha, benefitting 13 tribal communities.”
Modi added that the BJP govt was rapidly fulfilling all guarantees. “Modi’s guarantee means guaranteed fulfilment,” he said.
However, the remarks did not go down well with the BJD, which is now in opposition. “All that BJP has done in five months is change the colours of all the buildings. They are changing colours where there is no need to do so. The PM is in the habit of parroting the same sentiment that he emphasizes for a state. When he comes to Odisha, he talks about it and when in Maharashtra, he says he lays emphasis on it. Coal royalty has not been revised. Is it not a loss to Odisha?” Acharya said.
Countering Acharya, Pujari said, “Our colour never changes. But, the BJD has mastered changing colours. The BJD changed its stance and allied with us in 1998. After fulfilling its needs and from a selfish perspective, it severed ties with the BJP again in 2009 and established relations with Congress. Even now, it maintains close relations with Congress. Inside and outside the assembly, it continues to negotiate. The language of both parties is the same.”
Referring to Acharya’s comments, Pujari added that the senior BJD leader was under pressure to speak against the BJP. “From 2014 to 2024, the Modi govt has given more funds than BJD’s demands from the Centre. But the BJD govt spent it like their ancestral property,” he said.
