Ganjam District Celebrates Achievement as 53 Panchayats Declared TB-Free | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Central TB Division has declared 521 panchayats across the state as tuberculosis-free, with Ganjam district accounting for 53 of them, health department officials announced on Thursday.
“TB Mukt certificates will soon be distributed to qualified panchayats in a meeting to be held in consultation with the collector,” said Dr Bijay Kumar Panda, chief district medical officer (CDMO), Ganjam.
Ganjam district has shown significant progress in TB control, with cases dropping from 6,698 in 2023 to 5,612 in 2024. The district maintains a 92% cure rate, while TB-related deaths decreased from 232 in 2023 to 185 as of October 2024. Under the national TB control programme, patients receive free DOTS (directly observed treatment short-course) treatment for six months and monthly support of Rs 500 through the Nikshay Mitra scheme.
The TB Mukt Panchayat initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mar 24, 2023, aims to eliminate tuberculosis by 2025 through the active involvement of elected panchayat members.
Mayurbhanj leads the state with 93 TB-free panchayats, followed by Jajpur (55), Ganjam (53), Jagatsinghpur (50), and Puri (46). Other districts with significant achievements include Dhenkanal (37), Subarnapur (34), Sundargarh (32), Sambalpur (30), and Cuttack (20).
According to Ganjam’s TB officer Abani Kumar Patra, panchayats must meet specific criteria to qualify as tuberculosis-free, including collecting at least 30 samples per 1,000 population and maintaining TB cases at zero or one percent per 1,000 population. Additionally, all notified cases must benefit from the Nikshay Mitra scheme under Prime Minister TB Mukta Bharat Abhiyan.
