Patna: Taking cognizance of the recent agitation launched by Patna University (PU) students demanding allotment of hostel accommodation and elections to the PU Students’ Union, governor-cum-chancellor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday asked the university authorities to expedite repair and renovation works in hostels and allot hostel accommodation to the needy students at the earliest.
Addressing a meeting of PU officials and district law and order officials at Raj Bhavan here, the governor also asked the university to consider the students’ demand for union elections. He further asked the officials of paying serious attention to the union elections and taking a decision in the right earnest.
He said the authorities should take students’ demands seriously and try to solve them at the earliest. “The university administration is meant for resolving their grievances. Hostel wardens and superintendents should visit their respective hostels regularly and monitor their functioning. There must be a continuity of dialogue between the authorities and students for maintaining normalcy on the campus,” he said.
The governor directed the vice-chancellor to bring necessary changes in the university administration to ensure the university’s smooth functioning.
The meeting was attended among others by the divisional commissioner, district magistrate and senior superintendent of police of Patna and the vice-chancellor and registrar of PU besides the wardens and superintendents of all hostels.
