IndiGo to commence flights from Chennai to Penang next month | Mumbai News – Times of India
MUMBAI: IndiGo has announced the launch of daily direct flights linking Chennai and Penang, commencing December 21, making it the third Malaysian destination in the airline’s network after Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi. No other airline flies the Chennai-Penang route currently.
The daily flights are scheduled to depart Chennai at 2.15 am and land in Penang at 8.30 am, while the return flight will depart Malaysia at 9.30 am and land in Chennai at 10.35 am (all local times). The airline said that the schedule may be subject to change depending on the approvals granted by the regulatory authorities.
” The service addresses increasing travel demands between these cities, providing efficient options for all travellers. The airline will also reinstate its Bengaluru-Kuala Lumpur route from December 21, 2024,” IndiGo said.
Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, “We are extremely pleased to expand our network into Malaysia even further with the launch of daily, non-stop, flights from Chennai to Penang. IndiGo will now operate 28 weekly flights from India to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia. This expansion underscores IndiGo’s commitment to connecting not just major hubs, but also emerging destinations like Langkawi & Penang, offering options for business as well as leisure. IndiGo remains committed to delivering an affordable, timely, courteous, and hassle-free travel experience across our expansive network.”
The direct connections strengthen India-Malaysia relations, particularly in tourism and commerce. As India represents Malaysia’s fifth-largest source market, these routes enhance bilateral exchanges. The Chennai-Penang service reduces journey time from 7 to 4 hours, whilst Chennai serves as a connection point for travellers from Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
Penang stands out for its exceptional street cuisine, coastal beauty, and historical significance. The destination combines artistic expression through street murals, colonial-era structures, and natural attractions including rainforests and coastlines. It offers diverse experiences suitable for various interests, establishing itself as a significant Southeast Asian destination.
Chennai, Tamil Nadu‘s capital, represents a cultural centre with historical depth and living traditions. The city features religious architecture, traditional dance, and artistic expression. Located alongside the Bay of Bengal, it offers coastal attractions, traditional shopping areas, and authentic South Indian gastronomy, embodying South India’s cultural essence.
“Bookings are available through www.goIndiGo.in and the airline’s mobile application. These new services strengthen IndiGo’s international presence,” IndiGo said.
IndiGo operates a fleet of over 380 aircraft and connects to 85 domestic and 30 international flights with over 2100 daily flights. According to the latest Directorate General of Civil Aviation data, the airline holds a domestic market share of 63 percent.
