PM Modi rakes up Naveen’s health issue, CM counters | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said if voted to power in Odisha, they would form a special committee to investigate any potential conspiracy behind chief minister Naveen Patnaik‘s sudden declining health, Naveen in his first direct reference to Modi this season asserted that he is in good health and accused the PM of bringing up the topic solely to gain votes in the election.
Naveen’s health occupied centrestage ahead of the last phase poll on June 1 after Modi in a rally at Baripada in Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha segment said, “Those who have been close to Naveen babu feel there may be a conspiracy behind deterioration of his health. It’s a very serious matter. The people of Odisha have the right to know about the situation.”
Exuding confidence that a BJP CM will take oath in Odisha on June 10, Modi said, “A committee will be formed to uncover any potential foul play or hidden agendas that may have contributed to the Naveen babu’s falling health”. The PM repeated the same issue in two more rallies in Balasore and Kendrapada Lok Sabha seats, adding “It’s a sensitive issue relating to Naveen babu’s health. His well-wishers are worried why his health declined so fast. Naveen babu is not in a position to do anything on his own.”
PM could have called me and asked about my health: Naveen
The PM questioned if an influential group operating behind the scenes in Odisha, claiming to act on behalf of Naveen babu was connected to his health issues. “Curtains must lift from this mystery,” he said.
Hours later, chief minister Naveen Patnaik in a hurriedly called news conference at his residence, said, “It’s election time and he said this. It’s for votes.” “My health is completely fine. Else, I would not have been campaigning so much in this sweltering heat,” Naveen said.
Stating that if the PM was so concerned about his health, he could have just dialled him over phone. “He has stated publicly, before, that I am a good friend of his. All he had to do is to pick up a telephone and ring me up and ask me about my health,” Naveen said.
On the PM’s announcement of a committee, Naveen said, “If he wants to form a committee, he should form a committee to look into people who are spreading such false rumours.”
Naveen said certain BJP people from Odisha have been spreading rumours about his health in Delhi for the last 10 years. “Let me assure the Prime Minister that I am in perfect health and I have been campaigning in our state for the last month,” Naveen said.
In a video released earlier, Naveen said, “It’s really sad that leaders from outside the state are coming here and attacking me at a personal level, making hurtful statements and even using derogatory language.”
