95 research ideas shortlisted for govt research funding

Bhubaneswar: Odisha State Higher Education Council (OSHEC) will select research projects from 60 faculty members of degree colleges and state public universities from the shortlisted 95 for extramural research funding under the Mukhyamantri Research and Innovation Programme (MRIP).
The candidates will present their research project details before a group of more than 60 subject experts between Jan 15 and 24. State govt will provide a grant of Rs 10 lakh per faculty for science and other laboratory-related projects. The amount is Rs 7 lakh per faculty for social science and other non-laboratory projects.
The selection of research ideas started in July last year. As many as 106 ideas were submitted initially for funding. Out of these, 95 were shortlisted for the next round after screening, scrutiny and reviews.
“Now the faculty members will give presentations about their projects. A total of 60 projects will be selected for research funding. After selection, we will send it to the govt for approval,” said Mihir Kumar Das, an OSHEC member.
MRIP was launched by the previous govt in Aug 2023. It replaced the Odisha University Research and Innovation Incentivisation Plan (OURIIP) seed funding for faculty members of degree colleges and universities under the higher education department.
The age limit for researchers is 50 years. The tenure of funding will be two years from the date of sanction of funds. Their research proposal must address a research/technology/innovation gap in the subject area concerned or generate data relevant for the development of thrust areas of the state or country.
OSHEC, which is administering both the MRI extramural research funding programme and Mukhya Mantri Research Fellowship Test (MRFT), has implemented a multi-stage selection process to ensure the quality and relevance of research projects, official sources said.
“This initiative represents a significant step in Odisha’s commitment to advancing academic research and innovation. The selected projects are expected to contribute substantially to various fields of study while addressing crucial developmental challenges facing the state and nation,” said an official of higher education department.
