70-Year-Old Arrested for Killing Migratory Birds Near Chilika Lake | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Wildlife officials arrested a 70-year-old man on Friday for allegedly killing migratory birds near Chilika lake, the second poaching incident in the area within two weeks.
The accused, Arjuna Ghadei from Balinashi, was caught by an anti-poaching squad during early morning patrol in the Tangi wildlife range. The officials recovered carcasses of two migratory birds — a Northern pintail and a white-breasted water hen — that were allegedly poisoned.
“The suspect was apprehended while collecting the bird carcasses,” said divisional forest officer Amlan Nayak. The carcasses were buried following a post-mortem.
Carcasses of two Indian spot-billed ducks were found near Mangalajodi on Nov 23, although the culprits managed to escape. Earlier, 16 fishermen were detained for illegally entering the Nalabana wildlife sanctuary.
Authorities have intensified surveillance measures, like round-the-clock patrolling, deployment of drones, establishment of 21 temporary anti-poaching camps and focusing on vulnerable areas like Nalabana and Tangi range.
“We’ve strengthened our anti-poaching measures across the lake, particularly in high-risk areas. The use of modern technology like drones has enhanced our monitoring capabilities,” the DFO said.
