7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Japan; Tsunami warning issued – Times of India
In the early hours of Thursday, Japan’s southern island of Kyushu was jolted by two powerful earthquakes. The first, a 6.9-magnitude quake, was followed by a 7.1-magnitude tremor, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The seismic activity prompted the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami advisory.
According to Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake registered a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and was centered off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 kilometers.The height of tsunami is estimated to reach 1 metre.
“Tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said on X.
In response to the twin tremors, a tsunami advisory was issued predicting waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) along the southern coast of Kyushu and nearby island of Shikoku.
Meanwhile, the Japanese government has also set up a special task force for rescue operations.
As part of the Pacific “ring of fire,” Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone areas. The magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 2011 devastated large areas along Japan’s northeastern coast, killing nearly 20,000 people and triggering the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdowns. On Jan. 1, a magnitude 7.6 quake struck the north-central region of Noto and left 241 people dead.
