6 arrested for securing bail releases with forged docus | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: Berhampur police on Tuesday arrested six members of a gang involved in securing bail releases using forged documents, including fake Aadhar cards and land records.
The arrested persons have been identified as Sudhir Kumar Jena (48) of Alipur, Venkat Prasad Pattnaik (55) of Lanjipalli, Sanyasi Mohanty (55) of Dhobapalli, Nirakar Sahu (76) of Srikrushna Nagar, Babula Nayak (70) of Jail Road, and Judhistir Moharan (70) of Kolathigaon.
The racket came to light after a 75-year-old widow from Nuagaon, Aska, filed a complaint on Dec 21, alleging that Sudhir Kumar Jena had forged her deceased husband’s documents to act as a guarantor for multiple bail applications.
SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M said police recovered numerous forged documents during the investigation, including fake land pattas bearing seals and signatures from various tehsil offices, including Berhampur, Kanishi, Kukudakhandi, and Aska.
“Investigation revealed that Jena, a vegetable vendor, had secured the release of over 100 accused persons in the last three years by using forged documents of the complainant’s deceased husband, Ladu Kishor Behera,” the SP said.
The gang reportedly charged between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 per bail application, primarily targeting families of habitual offenders involved in theft and snatching cases. During interrogation, Jena implicated one Bijay Mohanty as the mastermind who initiated him into the illegal practice.
Police are conducting further investigation to identify other potential members of the racket and their previous bail fraud cases.
