57 held, over 200 booked for stone-pelting in Mumbai during anti-encroachment drive | Mumbai News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The Mumbai police have filed a case against more than 200 individuals and arrested 57 of them for their involvement in the stone-pelting incident that took place during the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) anti-encroachment operation in the Powai area of the city two days ago, according to an official.
The incident resulted in injuries to at least 15 police officers, five civic engineers, and five labourers.The official stated on Friday, “The police have filed a case against 200 persons and apprehended 57 of them on the charge of obstructing public servants from discharging their duty and rioting in connection with the stone-pelting at police and BMC officials. They were remanded in judicial custody.”
The BMC had previously stated that temporary huts had been constructed on a plot in Powaigaon and Mauje Tirandaj village, and the State Human Right Commission had instructed the civic body to take action against these structures.
As per an official, the civic anti-encroachment team, accompanied by police personnel for security, had gone to the location to remove approximately 400 allegedly illegal structures on an open plot. However, residents began protesting, claiming that they had been residing there for the past 25 years.
A video of the stone-pelting incident, which went viral on social media, showed men and women throwing stones while police and civic staff ran for cover.
