Bhubaneswar: A five-year-old elephant calf rescued from Karanjia wildlife division succumbed to severe spinal injuries on Wednesday at Nandankan zoo.
The calf had fallen into a stone quarry crater and was rescued on Jan 6 by the forest department.
“At Nandankanan, diagnosis revealed a lumbar vertebral disc dislocation leading to paralysis. The elephant was placed in a sling with its feet touching the ground. Various medicines were given. On Jan 16, its condition deteriorated, and it died on Wednesday,” said zoo deputy director Sanath Kumar.
A two-month-old white female tiger cub passed away at the zoo last week. Born to white tigress Rupa and melanistic tiger Krishna, the cub developed a fever and was immediately shifted to the veterinary hospital for treatment. With its death, the tiger population at the park drops to 27.
